Isle of Wight Rare Breeds

Hands-on Family Farm

Isle of Wight Rare Breeds CIC, evolved from our shared love for animals and our belief in the joy that nature and animals bring to so many people.

Based in the beautiful countryside of Alverstone on the Isle of Wight, an area of outstanding natural beauty, you’ll find Isle of Wight Rare Breeds.

At IOW Rare Breeds, our mission is simple: to create positive, memorable experiences that support wellbeing, education, and connection through the bond between humans and animals.

At our farm, you can meet a variety of animals, including cows, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, and horses. Among them are rare breeds like our Longhorn Cattle and English goats, as well as some unique and charming creatures such as our cuddly and super-friendly Valais Blacknose Sheep, often referred to as ‘the world’s cutest sheep.

Animals and People

Interacting with animals teaches kindness and compassion in an unconscious yet profound way. Animals, with their non-judgmental nature and ability to live in the moment, often reflect the emotions of those around them, fostering a compassionate and understanding environment.

Interacting with animals can improve our behaviour and well-being. Studies have found that being outside with animals can reduce stress and anxiety while increasing mood and mental well-being.

Community and Council Initiatives

IOW Rare Breeds Farm is a community-focused Community Interest Company (CIC) dedicated to creating meaningful connections between people and animals. Working closely with the Isle of Wight Council and the Department for Education, we provide inclusive, hands-on experiences that bring families closer to our friendly, well-loved animals in a safe and welcoming environment.

We are proud to support a range of community initiatives, including Short Breaks and HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) programs, offering enriching opportunities for children and families to engage, learn, and enjoy time together.

  • A CIC (Community Interest Company) benefits the community rather than private shareholders. We operate like a limited company but has a clear social purpose, meaning our profits are reinvested into supporting people, projects, or causes.

  • We have volunteering opportunities available, we’d love to hear from you. You can also support us by visiting and experiencing what we do first hand. Tell your friends and help spread the word, share your experience on social media, and leave us a Google review. You can also make a difference by donating or purchasing merchandise directly through our website to support our work.

  • No, we’re not a working farm; however, we’re based alongside Oaklea Dairy, which is a working farm that produces beef and distributes it locally.

  • We are highly adaptable and your visit can be customised based on the needs of the individual or group. Please don’t hesitate to make any special requests.
